Fascinating to watch the shifts in trends as 2022 comes to a close.
Globally, the current biggest risk for journalism is that a “tribal insults” version of Twitter leads to enough people leaving the platform to materially slow down the flow of news, sources and witness accounts.
Especially if Apple boots Twitter off the App Store. That would affect the posting mechanics for millions of the most connected people on the planet.
In Spain, the culture wars and political insults are heating way up already, months before the elections start. It will only get worse going in to 2023 and people will have a terrible time making any sense of it.
Will there be any reasoned debate about fixing real problems or will it all be tribal table banging and slogan shouting?
I will keep writing and reporting for you, in the midst of it all.
Looking at the new Substack graph, the line is going more up and more to the right. Each reader contributes a little and all together you achieve a lot.
2022 has been a strange year for me, hard work with not so many results, discovering this new path, but here we all are, still together.
The new combination of formats—the daily notes and a column with some more thoughts—is fine. I like the little audio option too. Tiny shifts that keep you informed about a changing Spain.
And now we have established a rhythm that works, I think we could use it for reporting trips in the New Year too, to get out and see things like before, so you can see and hear what is going on in that crucial election year.
Thank you for reading, and for your support.
