Spain Notes, Nov 1: Israel-Gaza + Princess + amnesty deal
/ Colombia, Bolivia and Chile have now withdrawn their ambassadors to Israel, after yesterday’s bombing of the Jabalia refugee camp. Petro (Colombia) said: “this is called genocide”.
/ Spain's Belarra (Minister of Social Rights) celebrated the position taken by the South American countries: "We have to stop Netanyahu", she said. Would she like Spain to do the same?
/ The Jordanian Foreign Secretary, Safadi, rang the Spanish Foreign Secretary, Albarses, last night after the Jabalia attack: “Israel is violating Int’l law, crossing all legal, ethical & humanitarian lines. This cannot stand”.
/ If the Google translation is correct, Spain is mentioned as a possible European receptor country of Palestinians in the Israeli Intelligence Ministry document suggesting moving everyone from Gaza to Sinai.
/ ABC, Spain’s oldest monarchist newspaper, of course thought the ceremony with the Princess of Asturias yesterday was wonderful for the future of the nation: “Princess Leonor represents precisely that, the future of a Spain that, beyond its political convulsions, must continue to be loyal to itself”.
/ El Mundo has written one editorial on the Princess, “a future of hope”, and one on the photo of Puigdemont with a representative of the PSOE in Belgium, “the scene represents a celebration of Puigdemont’s victory over the rule of law”.
/ El País just sticks with the Princess, “merit, trust and future”, writing that the eighteen-year-old “will now have to earn the trust she has asked Spaniards for by swearing allegiance to the Constitution”.
/ Grandad, Juan Carlos I, was not in parliament to watch yesterday. The former King, or the King Father, if you like, is still being shunned officially, even by his own son, the current monarch.
/ The Socialist Party and Esquerra have done a final deal on the amnesty. La Vanguardia reports the last minute stuff was about who to include in the amnesty list and they seem to have opted in favour of including some leaders of Tsunami Democratic, who are being investigated on terrorism charges.
/ There is now already a rush on to get it going through parliament.
/ So that Sánchez can be reappointed PM next week or the week after.
