Spain Notes, Nov 17: reactions to Sánchez PM
/ Sánchez was formally named as the new PM in the official gazette.
/ Sánchez swore his oath as PM before the King, who didn’t seem incredibly pleased about the moment.
/ A bunch of retired generals and other officers have signed a manifesto demanding the Army intervene to kick Sánchez out and call elections.
/ Feijóo said he would lead the opposition, tweeting: “History will not amnesty him”. The PP plans to continue with its protests.
/ Vox promised to keep fighting too, “traitor”, “treason”, “coup”, “unconstitutional”, “permanent mobilisation”, “resistance”, etc.
/ Both the PP and Vox are encouraging people to protest in Madrid tomorrow at 12 p.m.
/ The First Minister of Castilla la Mancha, García-Page (PSOE), said he was worried about “hatred among Spaniards” and the “very tense” atmosphere.
/ The Deputy First Minister of Castilla y León, García-Gallardo (Vox), called Sánchez “a traitor” whose word was “worthless”, adding “you are breaking Spain”.
/ Alt-right influencer Alvise is alternately encouraging his 326,000 followers on Telegram to assault socialist politicians with eggs or posting photos of the Prime Minister’s young daughter.
/ A poll in Catalonia showed the Socialist Party ahead of both separatist parties for the first time in a long time and that the separatists could even lose control of the regional chamber.
/ El Mundo: “A very divisive parliament, with unprecedented levels of political tension, now begins.
/ ABC describes and “unheard of” political situation in Spain, “the real challenge now beings in a parliament that will certainly be hostile and in which nothing is guaranteed”.
/ El País: “a parliament thus begins that will not be easy”.
/ Tucker Carlson published his puff-piece fanboy interview of Abascal (Vox) on X, with easy mechanical questions on Abascal’s favourite topics, after spending a few hours with Abascal at the protest outside PSOE HQ the other night and getting selfies taken with the Vox crowd.
