Spanish Reactions To Meloni's Victory in Italy
An overjoyed Vox congratulates Meloni while the left is horrified and PM Sánchez doesn't bother tweeting congratulations.
Looking at the headlines and tweets from politicians and journalists in Europe today, several years after the appearance of the new rights in different countries, there appears still not to be a consensus on what label to put on Giorgia Meloni’s party or coalition in Italy or what exactly that label means. While the BBC and AFP seem to be clear on “far-right”, in Spain, the chioce of one label or another depends on pre-existing ideologies.
Perhaps that confusion or lack of clarity has boosted her vote. What the Podemos ideologues used to call the “empty signifier”. Like when the politicians all enthusiastically promise “change”. This is perhaps a half-or-a-bit-full signifier of one colour or another depending on how you look at it, where you’re already standing in the room and on what the light is doing at that time of the evening.
