Comment: a sudden constitutional crisis in Spain appears to be afoot...

At other moments in Spanish history, perhaps 100 years ago, perhaps 150 years ago, this might have been a moment in which an Army general was rumoured to be considering some move to topple or otherwise tutor the sitting government in Madrid, perhaps even preparing his horse for a gallop to Congress. It would be reported that several fractious parties on the left and the regional separatists sought to destroy Spain again in some way and that something must be done, some move must be made to “save the nation”.

La Vanguardia and others reported yesterday that Sánchez’s amnesty deal with fugitive Catalan separatist leader Puigdemont would now include some people being investigated for terrorism offences. El País reported today that the boilerplate introductory language in the new bill that will soon be rammed through parliament would talk of the benefits of guaranteeing democratic coexistence. Of course it will. A “total reuniting” between Catalonia and Spain was the phrase Sánchez used the other day.
