Comment: the right takes to Spanish streets

How far might the protests go as Sánchez pushes his amnesty deal with Puigdemont through parliament, if the populist right especially believes it all to be unconstitutional and the work of traitors?

The amnesty deal is almost but not quite yet done. Puigdemont is making Sánchez and the socialists wait just a little bit longer. Spain does not yet get to see the set-piece confidence debate in parliament to reappoint Sánchez Prime Minister. Not for a few more days, anyway. The right has decided to use that time to take to the streets.

As the latest polls show conservatives edging ahead a couple of points and the far-right falling behind, the PP and Vox have both decided there are votes or support or brand recognition to be had by shouting things and waving flags against Sánchez and Puigdemont. This will set the opposition tone for that parliamentary debate but the two parties’ approaches are different, suiting each flavour of “right”.
